Joshua Cheptegei on Sunday became the 4th man in marathon history to win gold in 10,000 metres race three times in a row.

The world record holder over 5000m and 10,000m has had an injury-hit year and struggled to hit his top form but, on a hot, humid night in Budapest he broke clear approaching the bell and stamped his authority over the field with a 53-second last lap to come home in 27:51.42.

“3rd 10,000m World Title in a row and only the 4th man in history to do so! Congratulations,” President Yoweri Museveni of Uganda congratulated the athlete.

“I am very excited and proud that I have succeeded in winning my third world title in a row. This might be my last championships on the track. That’s why this gold medal means even more,”Cheptegei remarked at the World Athletics Championships Budapest 2023 in Budapest, Hungary.

Cheptegei, 26, only surged ahead in the final lap, comfortably securing the top spot, even if his time couldn’t rival his world record of 26:11.00.

Kenya’s Daniel Simiu Ebenso bagged the silver with a time of 27:52.60, while Ethiopian Solemn Brega clinched bronze just 0.12 seconds behind.

In the men’s 100m, the flagship event of the World Championships, defending champion Fred Kerley faced an unexpected exit in the semifinals. However, his American compatriot Noah Lyles took the baton, recording this year’s world-best time of 9.83 seconds.

“I came here for three golds, ticked off one, others are coming,” Lyles commented, looking forward to defending his 200m title in Budapest. “The 100m was the toughest. I will have fun with the event I love now.”

Botswana’s U20 double world champion Letsile Tebogo secured silver, setting a new national record at 9.88 seconds. Britain’s Zharnel Hughes trailed just behind.

Italy’s Olympic victor, Lamont Marcell Jacobs, despite posting his season’s best time of 10.05 seconds, couldn’t make it to the final.

Local hero Bence Halasz electrified the home crowd when he hurled the hammer beyond 80m on his initial attempt. Nonetheless, Canadian newcomer Ethan Katzberg seized the lead with his 81.25m fifth attempt. Poland’s Wojciech Nowicki also bested Halasz, recording 81.02m.

Halasz eventually settled for third with 80.82m, securing his second World Championships bronze.

In other events, Britain’s Katarina Johnson-Thompson regained the heptathlon world title with an aggregate of 6740 points. Serbia’s Ivana Vuleta clinched the women’s long jump gold, marking this year’s top global result of 7.14m.

Rwanda has signed a five-year football development and tourism promotion partnership a German football club, Bayern Munich.

The partnership, unveiled during FC Bayern’s first home game of the season, will see the club work specifically with Rwanda’s Ministry of Sports to set up a football academy to strengthen the development of football in the country.

This five-year deal will run until the summer of 2028.

The club will also display Visit Rwanda branding on match-day LED boards at the club’s 75,000-seater Allianz Arena and different activities will be organised to promote tourism and investment opportunities in Rwanda.

Jan-Christian Dreesen, FC Bayern Chief Executive Officer, said FC Bayern can become active on the African continent and gather important experiences.

He added that the new platinum partnership is aligned with long-term goals.

“We will promote ‘Visit Rwanda’ and help Rwanda grow in sports with projects for youth football. These are challenging and responsible tasks. Africa is a continent of opportunities. For FC Bayern, this is the next important step in internationalisation.”

Andreas Jung, FC Bayern Executive Board Member Marketing, said that he is looking forward to this new, very exciting collaboration.

“We will support the Rwandan Ministry of Sports in developing youth football programs, including our FC Bayern Youth Cup. We want to spread ‘Visit Rwanda’ as a tourism destination, and we also welcome the new partner to our business network.”

Unlike the Visit Rwanda Arsenal deal, the Bayern Munich Visit Rwanda deal will probably not include the sleeve sponsorship. Bayern have been without a sleeve sponsor since Qatar Airways did not extend their partnership.

Aurore Mimosa Munyangaju, Rwanda’s Sports Minister said this partnership with FC Bayern will support the development of youth football for boys and girls in Rwanda.

“We look forward to setting up the FC Bayern Academy where their expert coaches will share knowledge of the game with local coaches and players. The potential is there for Rwandans to excel in football and this partnership provides a great platform for Rwanda to strive for excellence in sports.”

Rwanda Development Board (RDB) will foot the bill. Clare Akamanzi, the CEO of RDB decline to revel the amount in the contract. She said it is confidential.

Meanwhile, she said it’s been five outstanding years since the Government of Rwanda announced the Visit Rwanda campaign and adding FC Bayern as another additional partner allows us to reach out to its millions of fans across the globe and tell them to visit Rwanda.

“Germany is among Rwanda’s top five tourism source markets and we aim to use this partnership to attract more tourists to Rwanda, showcase investment and business opportunities and encourage all to stay in Rwanda.”

The IX la Francophonie games hosted in the Congolese capital Kinshasa have been described as a success despite postponments and security concerns.

Zeina Mina the Director of the international committee of the Games has noted that Kinshasa has managed to convince the French-speaking Nations who participated in these Games in the field of infrastructure and even reception.

“Despite the postponements and concerns , Kinshasa succeeded in organizing the 9th Francophone Games which end on Sunday 06 August,” Mina said during an interview with journalists.

She said the games held since July 28 in Kinshasa, participation rate was satisfactory, despite all “the difficulties encountered, the concerns, the uncertainties” around this edition and the two postponements in 2021, then 2022.

According to details, La Francophonie in Kinshasa had 3,533 participants, including 1,810 athletes and artists who took part in the competitions, representing thirty-seven (37) countries having in common, the French language.

“At the very beginning, the accommodation was complicated, but after that, it was put in place. We have had several French-speaking records broken in athletics, thanks in particular to the quality of the track, which has been completely renovated,” she said.

Zeina Mina observed that she was surprised by a “great fervor” around the Games. “What strikes me are people jostling to see something new. They joined, they applaud everyone, whether Congolese, Romanians, French, Lebanese…”, confessed Zeina Mina.

Regarding the withdrawal or the minimum participation of certain delegations, the director of the CIJF mentioned the problem linked to the delay in the delivery of infrastructures.

“I have no judgment to make on their decision, everyone is free to participate or not. But I can understand the withdrawal of some athletes, because there were uncertainties about the delivery of the sites. The large delegations prepare in advance, this requires logistics, the athletes depend on their clubs, their federations, international participations, ”she explained.

“However, the athletics stadium was only delivered three weeks ago. In the end, all efforts were made by the host country and the infrastructure was delivered. It’s part of the Congolese miracle and the famous saying: impossible is not Congolese,” she argued.
